Where to Stay in Aruba? The Best Areas & My Tips

Where should you stay in Aruba? That choice will shape your vacation more than you may expect. Aruba is not a large island, yet Palm Beach, Eagle Beach, Oranjestad, Noord, Savaneta and San Nicolas all feel very different. One area revolves around resorts, restaurants and entertainment, while another is better for peace and quiet, an apartment or a more local setting.

I lived in Aruba for about six months in 2020, including in an apartment near Palm Beach. Since then, I have returned almost every year, most recently in 2026. This has shown me not only how convenient Palm Beach is as a base, but also how much your experience changes when you stay closer to Eagle Beach, Oranjestad or the south of the island.

In this guide, I compare the main areas to stay in Aruba. I look at atmosphere, beaches, restaurants, transport, tranquility and the type of traveler each area suits best. This will help you choose more than a beautiful hotel: you can choose a location that matches the way you want to experience Aruba.

🌴 My advice in brief: choose Palm Beach if you want plenty of restaurants and entertainment close by, Eagle Beach for a quieter beach vacation, and Noord for an apartment or villa with a rental car. Oranjestad suits travelers interested in town life and culture. Savaneta and San Nicolas are more appealing if you deliberately want to stay outside the familiar hotel zones.

🧭 How do you choose the best area to stay?

I would not start with a list of hotels, but with the question of how you want to spend your days. Do you want to walk to restaurants and bars in the evening? Palm Beach is the logical choice. Is a wide beach and a quieter setting more important to you? Look around Eagle Beach. If you plan to explore by rental car almost every day, an apartment in Noord may offer more space without putting you directly on a busy boulevard.

• Mainly for the beach: Eagle Beach or Palm Beach.
• Lots of exploring by car: Noord or a centrally located apartment.

Pay close attention to the map when comparing accommodation. A property that uses “Palm Beach” or “Eagle Beach” in its description is not necessarily right on the sand. It may be across a main road or farther inland. Always check the actual distance to the beach rather than relying only on the name of the area.

1. Palm Beach – the easiest choice for entertainment

Palm Beach is Aruba’s best-known high-rise hotel zone. On and around the beach, you will find large resorts, restaurants, shops, casinos, beach bars, piers and water-sports operators. It is the easiest place to move from breakfast to the beach, lunch, shopping and dinner without planning every part of your day.

When I lived near Palm Beach in 2020, I especially appreciated the combination of convenience and accessibility. I could get to the beach quickly, had many amenities nearby and could easily drive to other parts of the island. That is still a major advantage for a first vacation in Aruba.

The downside is that Palm Beach feels busier and more commercial than many other parts of Aruba. The beach can be lively around the large resorts, and there is more activity in the evening. If you mainly want silence, space and a smaller-scale atmosphere, I would look at Eagle Beach, Noord or Savaneta instead.

• Good for: first-time visitors, families, couples and travelers who enjoy restaurants, nightlife and water sports.
• Advantage: plenty within walking distance and a wide choice of accommodation.
• Disadvantage: busier, more commercial and often more expensive close to the beach.
• Do you need a rental car? Not every day, but one is useful if you want to explore Arikok, San Nicolas and the south independently.

2. Eagle Beach – quieter and closer to the classic beach experience

Eagle Beach feels different from Palm Beach. The beach is wider, and the surrounding area mainly consists of low-rise hotels, apartments and resorts. This puts less emphasis on a busy boulevard and more on the beach, space and relaxation.

The low-rise hotel zone is broader than Eagle Beach itself. Manchebo Beach and Druif Beach lie to the south, while many apartments can be found inland around Bubali. Booking sites regularly list these properties under Eagle Beach or Palm–Eagle Beach. Always check their exact location on the map.

If the beach is the most important part of your vacation, Eagle Beach would be high on my list. You are still fairly central between Oranjestad and Palm Beach. A taxi or rental car will get you to both areas quickly, while at the end of the day you return to a quieter part of the coast.

Check carefully what “at Eagle Beach” means for each property. Some hotels are directly on or just across from the beach, while other apartments are farther inland. Restaurants and shops are also less continuous than around Palm Beach. Travelers who want lots of choices within walking distance every evening may find Palm Beach more practical.

• Disadvantage: fewer clusters of restaurants and less nightlife than Palm Beach.

For a first trip without a rental car, I would usually recommend Palm Beach. For a vacation where the beach, tranquility and a relaxed pace matter more, I would be more likely to choose Eagle Beach. Neither is objectively better: it depends on what you want immediately around your accommodation in the morning and evening.

3. Noord – apartments, villas and freedom with a rental car

Noord is larger than Palm Beach alone. The district continues towards places such as Malmok, Boca Catalina and Arashi. You will find many apartments, vacation homes and villas here, sometimes in quiet residential streets and sometimes closer to the coast.

This area suits travelers who want more space, prefer to cook for themselves, or are visiting with a family or group. Accommodation slightly inland can also offer better value than a resort directly on the beach. The trade-off is that a rental car is almost always the most practical choice. Distances look short on the map, but walking in the heat or along busy roads is not pleasant everywhere.

The northwest is interesting for snorkelers because Arashi, Boca Catalina and Tres Trapi are nearby. The California Lighthouse and the route past Alto Vista are also easy to reach. If you want to visit Palm Beach in the evening, it is only a short drive from many parts of Noord.

• Good for: families, groups, longer stays and independent travelers.
• Advantage: many apartments and villas, more space and often a kitchen.
• Disadvantage: locations vary greatly and walking is not practical everywhere.
• Do you need a rental car? Yes, I would recommend one in most cases.

4. Oranjestad – for town life, history and a central location

Oranjestad is a logical choice if you do not want only a resort and beach vacation. You stay closer to shops, colorful architecture, museums, the harbor and various restaurants. The atmosphere is more urban than around Eagle Beach and Palm Beach.

Not every property in Oranjestad is next to a classic white-sand beach. Check whether you are choosing the town center, the harbor area, Surfside Beach or a resort with its own amenities. The center can also be busier when cruise ships are in port and become quieter again later in the day.

Oranjestad can be enjoyable for a shorter stay, for travelers who like combining town and beach, or if you want to visit Renaissance Island under the access rules in effect at that time. If you want to walk straight to a wide public beach every morning, Eagle Beach and Palm Beach are usually more logical choices.

• Good for: travelers interested in town life, culture, shops and restaurants.
• Advantage: a central location and a different atmosphere from the hotel zones.
• Disadvantage: not every part has direct access to the kind of beach for which Aruba is famous.
• Do you need a rental car? It depends on your plans; a car is useful for several days of island exploration.

5. Savaneta – smaller-scale and away from the large resorts

Savaneta lies farther south and feels much less like a traditional hotel zone. You will mainly find small-scale accommodation, apartments, vacation homes and a few places close to the water. The area suits travelers seeking tranquility who do not mind using a car more often for restaurants, beaches and activities.

Mangel Halto is on this side of the island and is appealing for snorkelling, kayaking and a quieter mangrove setting. Zeerovers in Savaneta is also a well-known stop for fish and shrimp. Do not expect a boulevard filled with shops and nightlife here.

Savaneta would not automatically be my first recommendation for a short first visit. For a longer stay, a return trip or a quiet vacation with a rental car, it can be a wonderful choice. Its location is also convenient for trips to San Nicolas, Baby Beach and the south.

• Disadvantage: fewer amenities within walking distance and farther from Palm Beach.
• Do you need a rental car? Yes, I would almost always rent one here.

6. San Nicolas and Baby Beach – special, but less central

San Nicolas lies in southern Aruba and feels noticeably different from the high-rise resorts of Palm Beach. The town is known for its street art, Caribbean influences and proximity to Baby Beach, Rodger’s Beach and Boca Grandi.

Staying around San Nicolas or Baby Beach can be interesting if you deliberately want the south to be the focus of your vacation. You can arrive at Baby Beach early and explore San Nicolas at quieter times. New accommodation around Baby Beach has increased the choice, but the area remains less central for the rest of Aruba.

If you want to visit Palm Beach’s restaurants and entertainment every evening, you will regularly spend longer on the road. I would therefore choose the south for tranquility, beaches and a different side of Aruba—not because it provides the quickest access to the whole island.

🏝️ Hotel, apartment, villa or all-inclusive?

Hotel or resort

A hotel or resort is above all convenient. Reception, a pool, housekeeping and often restaurants are provided. There is plenty of choice around Palm Beach and Eagle Beach. Do not look only at the star rating: check the room’s location, resort fees, parking, breakfast and what is actually included in the price.

Apartment or vacation home

I found an apartment very comfortable for a longer stay. You have more space, can prepare your own breakfast or meals and are less tied to a resort’s schedule. It can also be appealing for families and groups. Check whether air conditioning, final cleaning, taxes and electricity consumption are fully included in the displayed price.

Villa

A villa works well for a group or when privacy and a private pool matter. Noord offers many possibilities. Consider the distance to the beach and restaurants: a villa may appear close on the map but still be impractical without a car.

All-inclusive

All-inclusive can be convenient if you want clarity about a large part of the cost in advance. Even so, I would not automatically eat every meal at the resort in Aruba. The island has many restaurants and local places to eat. Compare the price difference and ask yourself how many days you will actually stay at the resort.

🚗 Where should you stay without a rental car?

Without a rental car, I would look at Palm Beach first. It offers the best combination of beach, restaurants, shops, excursions and nightlife within walking distance. For trips to Arikok, San Nicolas or the north coast, you can use an organized tour, a taxi or a rental car for part of your stay.

Eagle Beach can also work without a car, especially if you mainly want the beach and tranquility. Check which restaurants, supermarket and bus stop are genuinely close to your accommodation. Oranjestad is convenient for town life and public transport, but not every part offers the same beach experience.

💡 My tips before booking accommodation

• Always check the map: area names are used broadly and do not tell you exactly how far you are from the beach.
• Compare the total price: check taxes, resort fees, cleaning fees, parking and breakfast.
• Read recent reviews: pay particular attention to noise, maintenance, air conditioning and the immediate surroundings.
• Check the cancellation terms: a slightly higher flexible rate can be sensible when booking far ahead.
• Consider transport: cheaper accommodation is not always better value if you need taxis every day.
• Book popular periods early: the best options can disappear quickly around holidays and busy travel periods.
• Choose for your travel style: a famous resort is not automatically the best location for your plans.

How long should you stay in Aruba?

For a first vacation, I find about ten days comfortable. That gives you time to alternate activities, beach days and quieter moments. For a one-week trip, I would choose one central base. On a longer stay, you could combine two areas, although moving is rarely necessary because distances are limited.

If I returned to Aruba for a longer period, I would choose an apartment in or around Noord and Palm Beach for its space and central location. For a relaxed beach vacation with fewer crowds, Eagle Beach appeals to me more. For a second or longer trip, I would consider Savaneta to deliberately experience a different side of the island.

There is therefore no single best place to stay in Aruba for everyone. Palm Beach is not automatically better because it has the most resorts, and a quiet villa is not automatically more convenient because the island is small. Choose a location that matches your daily rhythm: do you want to walk, drive, spend most of your time on the beach or discover a different area every day?

My simplest advice remains: Palm Beach for convenience, Eagle Beach for tranquility, Noord for space and freedom, Oranjestad for town life and culture, and Savaneta or San Nicolas for a smaller-scale stay outside the familiar hotel zones.
