Aruba – My Half Year Living on One Happy Island 🌴☀️

Arrival on the Island

In 2020, I had the chance of a lifetime: to live for half a year on the beautiful island of Aruba. What began as an adventure soon turned into six unforgettable months filled with sunshine, turquoise seas, friendships, and personal growth.

Aruba isn’t just another vacation destination it’s an island with a soul. The moment I stepped off the plane and felt the warm Caribbean breeze, I knew something special was about to begin.

I stayed near Palm Beach, a lively area just steps from the sea. I worked remotely during the day, and in my free time, I explored every corner of this magical island.

🏨 Tip: Looking for the perfect stay near the beach? Check out TUI’s best hotels in Palm Beach or compare options on Expedia.

Living in Aruba – The Rhythm of One Happy Island 🌅

Island Time

Life in Aruba moves slower and that’s its magic. The locals live by the saying poco poco, meaning “take it easy.” At first, I struggled with the slower pace, but soon I realized how peaceful it feels to live without rush.

Each morning, I grabbed coffee at a small café in Noord where locals greeted me with Bon dia! (good morning in Papiamento). The friendliness and warmth of the Aruban people make you feel welcome instantly.

What to Do in Aruba – My Personal Highlights 🌴

🏖️ The Best Beaches in Aruba

  • Eagle Beach – Calm, wide, and perfect for swimming beneath the famous Divi-Divi trees.
  • Palm Beach – Lively and full of beach bars, restaurants, and water sports.
  • Baby Beach – A shallow lagoon perfect for snorkeling and relaxing.
  • Arashi Beach – My favorite for diving and snorkeling I saw a sea turtle here!

🌞 Travel Tip: Book your beach adventure or catamaran tour through TUI Excursions.

🌵 Arikok National Park – Wild Nature at Its Best

One of my most memorable experiences was visiting Arikok National Park, which covers almost 20% of the island. It’s a wild, untamed area filled with cacti, caves, and dramatic coastlines.

My highlight was hiking to the Natural Pool (Conchi) a hidden swimming spot surrounded by volcanic rocks.

🚙 Tip: You’ll need a 4×4 to get there. Rent your car easily through SunnyCars and explore the island freely.

🌊 Water Sports & Adventure

If you love the ocean, Aruba is your playground:

  • Windsurfing at Fisherman’s Huts
  • Kitesurfing at Boca Grandi
  • Diving at the Antilla Shipwreck
  • Snorkeling at Boca Catalina
  • Jet skiing, sailing, and even parasailing over the turquoise waters

🏙️ Culture & Local Charm

Oranjestad – The Colorful Capital

Oranjestad blends Dutch charm with Caribbean soul. Stroll past pastel buildings, local markets, and cozy cafés. Don’t miss tasting pastechi (stuffed pastry) or keshi yena (stuffed cheese).

San Nicolas – Aruba’s Artistic Side

The southern town of San Nicolas is filled with vibrant street art. Each year, artists from around the world transform its walls into open-air galleries.

🎨 Combine your visit with an island tour via TUI.

🍽️ Food & Nightlife

Aruba’s cuisine is a tasty blend of Caribbean, Dutch, and Latin flavors.

My favorites:

  • Zeerovers (Savaneta) – Fresh fish in a local setting.
  • The West Deck (Oranjestad) – Perfect for dinner with sunset views.
  • Eduardo’s Beach Shack (Palm Beach) – Healthy smoothie bowls and beach vibes.

Living in Aruba During COVID-19

In 2020, the world changed with the arrival of COVID-19. Aruba implemented strict measures, but what stood out was the unity of its people. Despite challenges, the island remained hopeful, resilient, and kind.

Why Aruba Stays in My Heart 💛

After six months, Aruba felt like home. The sound of the waves, the warm sun, and the smiles of the people stay with you forever.

✈️ Best time to visit: January to August with sunny days, warm breeze, and perfect beach weather.

🏝️ Plan your trip:
• Packages via TUI
• Hotels via Expedia
• Car rentals via SunnyCars

Conclusion – Aruba, One Happy Island 🌞

Aruba is more than a destination it’s a feeling of joy, peace, and connection. Whether you stay for a week or half a year, this island will capture your heart.
